A Love So Grand
by Michelle Drewek
From exotic flowers and vibrant décor, to a stunning Lazaro gown and breathtaking bridal grand entrance, KaMyia and Damone’s wedding day was truly spectacular in every way. Having been the sparkle in each other’s eyes since their first meeting in early 2007, it comes as no surprise that this vivacious couple would set fire to an out-of-this-world celebration of their love beginning with Damone’s unforgettable proposal.
Q How did he propose?
Damone proposed at a big birthday party he gave me on Jan. 19, 2013. Everyone close to me was there, including some family members from out of town. Damone had a local rap artist from the Green Bay area come and rap a song I was very fond of. While he was rapping — and I was singing — Damone got down on one knee in a room full of close to 200 people and asked me to marry him. Sweet! Before Damone proposed to me he did ask my father for his blessings, which my father gave with no hesitation.
Q What resource did you find most helpful in planning your wedding?
No one was more beneficial to planning our wedding than our wedding coordinator David Caruso and his team. They were beyond amazing providing ideas, resources and allowing our vision to take part in every decision.
Q What was the most important item for your wedding that you knew you just had to splurge on?
My dress! I knew it had to be amazing and compliment my entrance. It was a gorgeously designed gown by Lazaro with a mermaid fit and a sweetheart corset top. I also wanted the venue flowers to stand out and leave guests in awe.
Q What was your biggest surprise when planning your wedding?
The live entertainment Damone surprised me with. One of my favorite R&B singers, R.L., performed during the reception and I had no clue he was going to be there. Damone did an excellent job in giving me the wedding of my dreams.
Q Were there any funny things or moments that happened at your wedding?
I forgot to tell my father I would be coming up on the lift behind him when I made my entrance, so while everyone was looking around to see where I was coming from so was he. When we watch video footage of my entrance his back is to me and he has no clue that I’m coming up behind him until he turns around and I’m just there at the top of the platform.
Q Did you have a “Something Old, Something New, Something Borrowed, Something Blue?”
My earrings from my mother were Something Old, a bracelet from my sister-in-law was Something New, Something Borrowed was a diamond necklace my grandmother allowed me to wear, and the garter I wore under my dress was Something Blue.
Q Were there any aspects of DIY that you incorporated?
We definitely wanted our two small children, ages 2 and 4, to be a part of our wedding, but feared they would be all over the place. So we got a wagon that we had spray painted gold and white, strapped them in it and had them pulled down the aisle by one of our ushers. This way, we got them down the aisle with no problem and they sat still during the ceremony (for the most part).
Q Did you do anything special during the ceremony?
We had a unity candle, and Damone and I jumped the broom. Additionally, the officiant did the Chinese Explanation for a Wedding Ring's Finger. I loved this! We also passed our rings throughout the guests allowing everyone to say a blessing over them in regards to our new life together.
Q What would be one piece of advice that you would offer to future brides?
Working with an experienced wedding coordinator makes thing so much less stressful. Also, always stay true to your ideas and things you want.
